Food science is a broad industry that is needed in the modern world. As demand for specific recipes and foods, such as low in fat, carbohydrates and sugar, increases, the food science industry continues to expand. Food scientists apply the basic principles and knowledge of chemistry, microbiology, engineering and business to research, develop, process, evaluate, package and distribute food. Food scientists are responsible for the safety, taste, acceptability, and nutrition of processed foods.

They develop new food products and the processes for their production. Food scientists can focus on basic research, food safety, product development, processing and quality control, packaging, or market research. Food scientists can work in food processing plants or food ingredients where raw foods are converted into beverages, cereals, dairy products, meat, poultry, fish and seafood, fruit and vegetable products, snacks, ready meals and animal foods. This specialization allows students to explore careers that can have a positive impact on all members of society by ensuring safe, high-quality food.

Students will learn to work with customers and to understand the principles and processes that underpin food development. K-State's undergraduate food science and industry program is nationally recognized and approved by the Institute of Food Technologists, a non-profit scientific society with members working in industry, academia, and government. The commitment of food science and technology professionals to advance food science, to ensure a safe and abundant food supply and to contribute to healthier people around the world is an integral part of that evolution. In food science, researchers work to research and analyze multiple methods of processing and preservation.
